Apartment Gardening Tips

A common misconception among a lot of people is that you can’t garden at all if you happen to live in an apartment. In an apartment environment, there’s always the possibility that you will have to share areas with others. This could put your plants in jeopardy. Some apartments complexes have balconies, but maybe yours won’t. These are some of the reasons that so many people are resistant to apartment style living. The truth is, however, that there are plenty of ways to grow and tend your own plants-even in a small apartment setting. The primary goal of this article is to show you how easy it is to garden in a smaller dwelling.

If you haven’t found your apartment yet, but you are looking for one, focus your search on apartments that have balconies or small patios. More importantly, try to find an apartment that has a balcony that faces the sun. Yes there are plants that thrive in shady areas and in cooler temperatures, but you stand to have a much better chance of success if you can give them some direct sunlight every day. In any case, don’t worry about it to much if this isn’t realistic. There are ways to simulate sunlight that you will learn about when you do your homework. If at all possible though, direct and actual sunlight-even if it is only for a portion of the day-is best. Also, it’s not mandatory to spend large sums of money on fancy, expensive pots and containers. The type, or cost, of the containers you buy aren’t what’s important, and you already have enough day to day expenses to deal with. Just about any container will work. You can almost always find containers at discounted prices. Some unusual places where you might find cheap items you can use for containers include second hand stores, estate sales, and even pawn shops. Shopping for inexpensive containers will give you more cash flow to buy better quality plants, seeds, soil, and other items you need for your container gardening.

Have you thought about the merits of using hanging plants? Hanging plants are a great way to garden when you have limited space available for your containers. The weight of larger plants, and the size of their containers that will let their roots spread out, make them poor choices for hanging plants. But you won’t have a problem finding numerous plants that are small enough to put in hanging planters with attractive, small containers. If kids and pets digging into the soil of your containers is a problem, make your garden with hanging plants. Your plants will thrive much better if they aren’t disturbed. Do you love to garden, but your apartment or home is small? Cheer up! There are a lot of possibilities open to you that you probably haven’t thought about. You won’t be able to convince everyone of this, of course, however true it might be. Just because you don’t have a yard doesn’t mean that you can’t ever grow plants of your own. Container gardening allows you to put plants in containers anywhere you want around your house. You can tuck them on a shelf in the kitchen, in the bathroom, or on a sunny windowsill. You now have enough information to plan, and implement, your own container
garden. Just a small investment of time on your part researching and learning more about container gardening will give you a lot more information. If you read our tips, listen to what the experts in your nursery tell you, and do some independent research, you’ll be off to a flying start having your very own container garden.
